BLUESKY MEDIA RELEASE - 01March2017
On the evening of Tuesday 28 February between 6:10pm and 03:00am Wednesday 01 March, there was a significant outage to Internet services due to severe weather conditions in Hawaii. The main gateway for O3B services is housed in Hawaii and heavy storms and flash floods with a rainfall of over 100mm per hour impacted the O3b Satellite service.
Technicians were alerted by monitoring alarms at approximately 6:10pm that the O3b service was offline and worked throughout the night with O3B Network Operations Engineers to recover the service remotely. The backup service switched automatically to Geo satellite, but customer usage was limited with capacity and speeds.
The Service outage affected Bluesky customers using Internet services including Mobile Data, and Moana TV. During these times, connectivity was intermittent.
Technicians continue to closely monitor the O3b service since the outage and it is stable.
“We do appreciate our customers were hit with the inability to use their remaining internet allowance on the last day of the month, and in recognition of this, we will be increasing internet and postpaid mobile data plans by an additional 20% of your plan for the month of March. We will also ensure that add on purchases that had balance remaining will also be addressed.”
Bluesky will be adding further resiliency to the O3B service by constructing a second Terminal in Avarua to minimize rain interruptions to the service for Rarotonga customers. This new terminal is planned to be commissioned by the end of March.
