Great response to free data shows Cook Islanders embracing technology
Telecom Cook Islands received an incredible response to the 23rd Celebration promotion held over the recent long weekend. The first data promotion of its kind offered free mobile data to all customers on the pre-paid and post paid network. Run from 7pm Thursday 3rd July to midnight Sunday 6th July Telecom saw much higher demand than forecast with traffic volumes swelling at its highest to ten times the normal traffic levels and at its lowest, four times the normal level.
With the switch to free data on Thursday, technicians quickly identified system issues working with teams in New Zealand and China to take action. A responsive public called and went on line to inform of any problems they were experiencing engaging in the free data event with the overwhelming response clearly showing a definite shift towards our people wanting to take up the newer and improved technologies provided by Telecom Cook Islands.
“The network may have had its toughest test ever, with thousands of people downloading movies, TV Series, Games, You Tubing, Streaming, Drop Boxing, Snapchating.... really the list is long of what people in Rarotonga ended up being able to do on their phones over the long weekend” says Acting CEO Helen Aoina.
The weekend saw unprecedented use with five times more subscribers using data. Speeds were at times slower with drop offs occurring in certain areas in the early stages however the mobile data network, though tested to its limits, still allowed our customers to experience the service.
Telecom Cook Islands CTO Rob McFadzien said “Telecom recognises that the technical issues this promotion identified were unexpected but have been beneficial in providing vital information on how to improve our network for the future”.
The promotion provided solid market response with valuable insights to market behaviour which will form the basis for future mobile data plans.
